CARNAVAL; DANSE PANDÉMIQUE

Carnaval; danse pandémique is personal reflection of the Corona pandemic times that seem to be in the past, but are still influencing our day to day lives. The work refers to the celebration of Carnaval and to the Danse Macabre during the pest plagues in the Middle Ages.

The work can be a starting point for meaningful conversations leading to more insight, understanding, empathy and processing.

The art installation Carnaval; danse pandémique consists of 2 movies (made in collaboration with William Pennings) that are presented in a household setting (a living room) and a small dancefloor.

It portrays the daily lives of 11 Dutch ‘household bubbles’  during the lockdowns of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The work is made in 2020-2023 following the corona rules that applied at the time. It was shown for the first time at HOK Gallery, Den Haag (17-2 till 4-3  ’23)

Who shall I be, what shall I make me?

Aipas

A series of A3 pencil drawings. In these drawings I am identifying with a doll I found at a flea market: a typical representation of a white, Western girl. She is a bit battered, awkward looking wearing a conservative stiff dotted dress. She is all I never wanted to be… I give her masks from all over the world and all cultures so she can pick and choose who she wants to be. She keeps the dress though: not able to loose or change her dna, cultural upbringing and past experiences.

‘Scape trials

‘scape trials at the Analog Textiel Festival, 2014.

For the Analog Textile Testival in 2014 (organised and hosted by the Grafische Werkplaats) I made a series of ‘scapes with newly learned silkscreen techniques. Learned them from Daniel Henry during a workshop at this festival. The ‘scapes trials were presented during an exhibition at Hoop Warenhuis, Den Haag.

Also presented at the Mr Weiss exhibition in 2015 at Binckhorstlaan 215, Den Haag.

Silkscreen prints on fabrics, mostly 45 x 45 cm.

The presentation form can vary.

There are also a couple of hangings and ‘carpets’ that went with the presentation at Hoop Warenhuis.

‘t Fort (a drawing installation)

‘T Fort, Monster, 1998.

A drawing installation in an empty house full of memories, waiting to be upgraded and occupied again. Based, but warped in reconstruction, on my own memories and childhood photographs.

Pencil and crayon drawing on wall and floor and sealed ballpoint drawings and a wet toy rabbit.

Circle of friends, 2003

Circle of friends – 2003.

The project CIRCLE OF FRIENDS started at the end of 2001 in memory of my beloved Craig Davies. The project came to a closure in 2003 with an exhibition at
“The Heritage Centre“ in Oswestry (Wales). In the project I try to map the network of my and Craig’s friends. It is an interactive project in wich the reactions of the participating friends are part of the work. CIRCLE OF FRIENDS exists of linocut portraits that I made together with the reactions of the portrayed in varied techniques.

You can have a look at the website of the project here.

Herinneringstekeningen, 1998-2009

Memories drawings – 1998-2006.

Ballpoint drawings on kite paper.

My own childhood memories form the base for these drawings, triggered by photographs and drawings from that period. (most of) The drawings are made on transparent kite paper to relate to the furtiveness and inaccuracy of memories. They are drawn in layers in ballpoint so that they too, as memories do, change, bleach out and disappear as time goes by.
