In 2020 I made a series of masks in which I investigate my personal emotions, reactions and thoughts about the Civis-19 pandemic. Since most of them are made during lock-down I have mainly used materials I had lying around my studio and home.
‘Underworld’ is a series of risoprints made with photographs I took of trees/landscapes mirrored in water. They show an inverted, inaccessable world full of mysterie. The same but also the opposite of the world we live in and call reality. There are 111 prints on paper, all a bit smaller than A4, all different in image, amount of layers or colours, some of them have been sewn over or have a sewn-on layer of sheer fabric.
An A6 booklet of risoprints and riso-drawings. There are 10 booklets with 80 M & M’s, 5 with 64 and 2 with 40 M & M’s. Each booklet has different variations of the 80 different images; all risoprinted and many of them drawn on. There are also loose A6 M & M riso-drawings.
Scraps sketches are small (A3 or smaller) sketches in fabrics for my ‘scapes to try out different techniques and materials.
A series of A3 pencil drawings. In these drawings I am identifying with a doll I found at a flea market: a typical representation of a white, Western girl. She is a bit battered, awkward looking wearing a conservative stiff dotted dress. She is all I never wanted to be… I give her masks from all over the world and all cultures so she can pick and choose who she wants to be. She keeps the dress though: not able to loose or change her dna, cultural upbringing and past experiences.
Animal Dolls is a series of A3 riso-drawings / -prints of combinations of antique dolls and stuffed animals sbowing the animal nature of innocence.
De creatieve stad (= the creative city) was a poster project set up by the Grafische Werkplaats in cooperation with Haags Gemeentearchief. 30 Den Haag based artists designed and analog printed an A2 poster. These were exhibited at the Werkplaats. Digital A1 prints of these posters were exhibited at the Tramtunnel Gallery. I silkscreen-printed a 3-colour image (upon which I drew and stuck dot-stickers, making each print a one-off) of a towerblock as seen through the ‘stocking’ of the covering of the metro-line.
In 2017 I have worked at TextielLab in Tilburg. There I have translated a Cityscape drawing into a wall tapestry: Cityscape Tapestry (TexLab) 1. In it I combined several techniques: the base is woven and on top of this I ‘pinned’ with embroidered circles a laser-cut layer. I also made 3 Cityscape plaid & pillow sets.
In 2019 I returned to work at TextielLab to make 4 more Cityscape wall hangings. Again I combined several techniques in them: weaving, laser-cutting, knitting, cable making.
Thanks to Textiellab & St. Stokroos for making this project possible.
Dolls & Masks, 2018
A series of riso-prints who each have been invidiualised with drawing. Dolls are combined with masks and sometimes costumes of cultures from all over the world.
